Coaching Courses

1. Introduction

Coaching courses for hockey follow the guidelines set down by the Hong Kong Coach Accreditation Program (HKCAP). Hockey practical sessions will be conducted by qualified coaches of the HKHA. Sports general theory will be conducted by the Coach Education Department

The Hong Kong Coaching Committee has established a two year coaching course plan. Exact dates of courses will be advertised on the website.

2. Structure of Courses

Courses available in Hong Kong are:

Level 3 and FIH courses will be conducted overseas and coaches will attend through recommendation by the HKHA.

To apply for a course, click on application form, and complete and send by post with cheque to the Hong Kong Hockey Association Office.

3. Pre-Level 1 Course

This will consist of one three hour session. Participants will be issued with course notes and the Level 0 Coaching Manual, from the Australian Hockey Association. Participants will receive a certificate of attendance at the end of the course.

An outline of the syllabus is given below.

The course focuses on technique of basic skills to play the game of hockey:

  1. Moving with the ball
  2. Passing and receiving (stationary)
  3. Passing and receiving (moving)
  4. Defending
  5. Goalkeeping
  6. Tactics / Set Plays / Running a session

4. Level 1 Course

Part A: Sport General Theory

This is run by the Coach Education Department and lectures are conducted at the Hong Kong Sports Institute or Sports House. Click on dates to see courses available for 2002. Please note only one course is available in English. Names have to be put forward by the HKHA. Please fill out the attached form if you wish to attend.

Part B and C: Sport specific theory and Practical

This will take place in 3 modules. Participants will be expected to complete all 3 modules within one year. Each participant will receive course notes and a Level 1 Coaching Manual from the Australian Hockey Association.

Module 1 Basic Skills

Module 2 Application of Skills

Module 3 Tactics / Set Plays / Organisation of Session

  Games encouraging attacking principles of play
      width, support, possession
  Penalty Corners
      positioning in attack and defence, drag out , trap
  Systems of Play
      5:3:2:1 and 3:3:3:1
  Planning and organising the training session

Part D: Sport Specific Coaching Experience

Six hours of coaching experience will be required before assessment can take place. Coaches should keep a written record of sessions conducted. The six hours does not include match times.

Completion

After meeting the requirements for Parts A, B, C and D participants will be awarded Level 1 Certificates.

5. Level 2 Course

Part A: Sport General Theory

This is run by the Coach Education Department and lectures are conducted at the Hong Kong Sports Institute or Sports House. Click on dates to see courses available for 2002. Please note there are no level 2 courses available in English during 2002. Names have to be put forward by the HKHA. Please fill out the attached form if you wish to attend.

Part B and C: Sport specific theory and Practical

It is likely the Level 2 course will be conducted by an overseas coach. All details with a syllabus will follow shortly.

Part D: Sport Specific Coaching Experience

Twenty hours of coaching experience will be required before assessment can take place. Coaches should keep a log of coaching sessions. The twenty hours does not include match times.

Completion

After meeting the requirements for Parts A, B, C and D participants will be awarded Level 2 Certificates.
